For as long as electricity has been in our homes, it has presented homeowners with many conveniences. But it has also produced inherent dangers that have led to the deaths and injuries of millions of people worldwide.
In the late 1960's, a bright engineer named Richard Simpson led a development team to convert a U.C. Berkeley patent into the first Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet. By 1972, the US National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) required new home construction to include GFCI outlets for safety. Since then, the GFCI reduced the number of deaths associated with home electrocutions.
In 1995, Simpson realized a need for technology to reduce the large problem of electrically-ignited house fires. The SafePlug receptacle was born from this need. SafePlug receptacles provide the same type of safety for appliance wires as the circuit breaker panel delivers for in-wall electrical distribution wiring. They both disconnect electricity when overloads occur in the wires, before they can damage insulation and start fires.
In 2001, OFI Inc. was established to help bring this much needed technology into our homes.
Since 2002, a top team of engineers have been working with forensic fire experts and Fire Marshals to identify all the major electrical causes of fires. Now SafePlug receptacles also protect against the other top causes of fires from electrical faults. The company has a number of patents granted and pending protecting these innovations.
Finally, SafePlug receptacles help shield home electronics and appliances from surges and poor power quality.
